If you are frustrated with your lack of results and aches and pains caused by your diet and fitness routine, you may be missing an essential part of your health routine. We all know how important a regular activity and diet routine are in maintaining overall health; but, what many of us forget completely is the importance of stretching our muscles and joints in our daily routines. The truth is, stretching is actually one of the healthiest, and unfortunately most neglected, aspects of a balanced health routine. Just 15 minutes of stretching a day can amount to significant benefits to your overall health and mobility, and allow you to move freely without those aches or pains.

Below are just some of the health benefits you will experience with a regular stretching routine.

• Maintain your flexibility! Stretching keeps our muscles limber and reduces your risk of injury
• Reduce your pain! Stretching helps reduce pressure on joint cartilage and helps reduce pain in your bones and joints
• Increase your performance! Flexible joints and muscles have greater range of motion, use less energy and move more comfortably
• Ease your post exercise soreness! Stretching your joints and muscles speeds the removal of waste products caused by strenuous exercise, reducing soreness
• Feel better! Stretching reduces muscle tension, improves circulation and relieves pain and fatigue
• Relieve stress! Stretching relieves stress and tension, and provides time for meditation or reflection in your busy schedule

Following proper technique is essential for both getting the most out of your stretching routine, and preventing injury such as pulled muscles. Here are some tips that will help you to keep on track while doing your daily stretches.

• Don’t bounce. Bouncing while stretching increases your risk of pulling or tearing your muscle tissue
• Pay special attention to overworked muscles. Concentrate on the muscle groups that you used in your workout and use lots in your everyday life
• Stop if it hurts. Pain is a sign that you are pushing your muscle beyond its boundaries. You should feel tension, but not pain
• Stretch at the end. Stretch after your workout when your muscles are warm for best results
• Variety is the spice! If plain stretching becomes a little tiresome, try joining a pilates or yoga class. You might learn some new stretches that work wonders for you!

Incorporating stretches into your regular routine will not only make you feel better, but it will allow you to get the best out of your diet and exercise program as well. Think of it as a three-pronged approach to optimal health!
